An 18th Century Louis XV Period, Giltwood Mirror. Circa 1750

The shaped rectangular plate within a pierced mirrored surround carved ornately and decorated with vine leaves, grapes, rose garlands and rocaille, all around its frame, surmounted by a pierced C-scroll cartouche centred by an ‘en corbeille’ vine basket, decorated with beautiful foliage and grapes, emblematic of the grape harvest, the apron with a rose basket, on scrolled supports. Provençial works of the 18th century, Southern France. Circa 1750.

18th century Louis XV period Provence:  At that time was one of the most important region to manufacture mirrors. The best known are those of Beaucaire. They recognize their grapes , vine leaves and branches. The pediment is often a bouquet garni. This is achievable due to the quality of the wood  in the region, the wood is soft and more prevalent in this region. It facilitates the work of the sculptor.  Construction is also very particular to the south. It consists of a set of rails that are assembled and pegged. The most beautiful Provencal mirrors have very pronounced four corners scrolls. The acanthus leaf is also very representative of this region. This mirror is of excellent quality, the decor is remarkable and an example of decorative arts which held an importants in the Provencal regions of the South of France. Its gilding is original, an asset to its charm.
